Highland Life

8 March 2003

[The Royal Flag of Scotland]Three sure-fire indications that one is in the Highlands:

  1. Walking down the street and being passed by a large man in a kilt, carrying a Targe (circular wooden shield) and a two-handed Claymore. Actually that wasn't so unusual during tourist season. It was when his mobile phone went off that made me giggle.
  2. The train from Elgin slows down to walking speed because there's a flock of sheep on the tracks. We herded these sheep for a couple of miles before they found another weak spot in the fence and jumped away.
  3. It's Saturday evening, and the only establishments in town which are open for business are the pubs. Oh, and a small Internet company.
