Well, that was fun. At 8pm just as I was thinking about going home, a 5.6 quake hit the office. My first real quake. No damage. Very neat low-frequency high-amplitude undulating motion towards the end of the event. I don't think I'll ever gripe again about the obnoxiously placed structural beam that transects my office.
Halloween Randomness:
For the past couple of weeks I've been carrying the pager for our production server farms. The bad news is that the pager likes to go off at 4am. The good news is that I'm up to level 9 on its built-in Tetris game. Woo!

I just caught myself saying 'dawcument'. Gawd dammit, I is pickn' me up an accent. Another one, eh? Blimey.
A couple of months ago I calculated that human CO2 production was about 6.8 billion metric tons per year based on 2004 data. A recent article in Wired quoted a new study which stated CO2 "rose from 7.0 billion metric tons per year in 2000 to 8.4 billion metric tons in 2006". Nice to see that my back-of-the-envelope calculations agree with an internationally funded study to within 15%. Not nice to see that reality is getting worse so fast.
